Dudley College has a long tradition of Glass making and is home of the IGC (International Glass Centre). We have recently re-located to Mons Hill and upgraded our facilities giving us more flexibility to promote the use of glass through our curriculum.
This newly refurbished centre of excellence caters for a wide range of students from all parts of the world. It has gained a reputation for being the only centre of its kind offering a hands-on practical approach to kiln, cold and hot glass blowing, whilst still retaining a design input and versatility to suit enthusiasts, studio crafts persons and graduates in glass.
The Centre is well equipped with a range of machines and furnaces, including the following:
- Glass making facilities: furnace, 2 glory holes, 2 glass-makers chairs, a lehr, moulds, press and hand tools.
- Lampworking facilities and kilns
- Decorative and cold glass working machinery including sand blasting cabinets, diamond drills, diamond mitre wheels, diamond saw, engraving lathes, flatting and polishing facilities.
In addition to glass facilities being available to all our level1, 2 and level 3 art and design students, fashion students and international students, the following courses are also available for adults:
- One year associateship in glass
- NCFE hot glass
- NCFE bead making
- In addition to the main courses there are also LINK courses with local schools, classes for Supported Learning, the disabled and those with learning difficulties, evening classes for hot glass blowing.
We offer basic evening courses in glass blowing and bead making, certified by NCFE at level 1. Or for existing glass practioners/artists with an interest in glass we offer the glass associateship programme consisting of the use of glass facilities and technical support on a negotiated basis.
